Skipper: Jan Bart Age: 45 Professions so far: tugboat captain, sailmaker, free lance photographer Professions in the future (??): musician, yacht designer, armchair sailor Favorite type of boat: J/35 Favorite book about sailing: Winning in One Design Favorite music: Steely Dan Favorite movie: Tombstone (which is really strange because I hate westerns in general) Favorite type of car: Saab 900 Turbo 16S Hobbies:regatta sailing, tinkering with boats, music making, armchair sailing Biggest ambition: Winning a Volvo C30 (but a TNG watch will do fine thank you.) A friend of mine talked me into signing up for leg 2 of the vorg. I logged in for the first time a few hours after the start and casually sailed the boat a few times a day for the first 2 days. As time went by I figured out better and better how the game should be played and got hooked. Black Rover is sailed by my 16 year old son Maarten who is studying to hopefully become a professional yacht designer and has an uncanny knack for figuring out sailing tactics which took me 45 years to learn the hard way. We are basically a two boat campaign. We discuss tactics frequently during the day and sail each others boats when one of us is occupied in the real world. New Frontier is the name of my J/35 which I own since 2005. I spent two years restoring and refitting her completely and think she's one of the best all-round cruiser/racers of all times. Wickedly fast on all points of sail under all circumstances without being extreme in any way. New Frontier is the name of a song by Donald Fagen in which he sings about parties held by teenagers in a shelter which his dad built in the garden during the cold war. The shelter was ironically named after the nickname of the JFK administration. I love the song and I find the true meaning of the term "new frontier" also appealing. I feel very at home in the "Liberation Tigers" group, founded by and for Northerners of the "Sri Lanka Incident" of leg 3, and although I have to admit to the fact that I can't always live up to the motto's of the group I believe they are really worth striving for. |
